The graduation ceremony has become an indispensable part of campus life. It is a solemn yet joyful rite that recognizes each graduating student’s achievements and all the sacrifices he/she and his/her families have made in order complete the student’s education. It is also an important transition rite, in which students are moved up out of the current level in which they have stayed for several years, and into a new stage of life.
The Importance of the Bachelor’s Gown
The graduation ceremony would be incomplete without the bachelor’s gown. It is a very formal piece of clothing that is supposed to indicate each graduating student’s intellectual capability, social maturity and dignity. It is worn together with a mortar board cap, which has its own symbolisms. Because the academic cap and gown are so important, they should be well-chosen and distinguished-looking.
Staying Within the Budget
However, it is a reality that not all students share the same financial resources, and many are very concerned about staying within a particular budget. If you’re one of these, you understandably won’t be having a custom made set of graduation clothes. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that you have to settle for a raggedy looking robe and cap. Here are some tips to help you find quality graduation attire at low prices:
- Know the rules. Each educational institution will have its own guidelines regarding what students and faculty should wear to the graduation ceremony. It’s not enough to know that you need academic regalia. You have to know specifications such as length of sleeve, allowable color combinations, necessary accessories, robe length and cut, etc. By knowing these basic things, you will be able to avoid wasting time and money on items that are not permitted by your school/college/university.
- Plan. If you want to be creative, think about how to stay within your institution’s guidelines, while injecting as much of your personality into your attire as possible.
- Plan ahead. It’s very easy to put off thinking about what you will wear for graduation, what with all the responsibilities that you are probably faced with both on and off the campus. However, planning ahead will give you more time to think about your options. You will also likely get your items at lower prices, because you will avoid the peak season for grad wear.
- Keep an eye out for packages. Packages are probably the best way to save money. Look for deals that include all the items you may need (robe, cap, tassel and sash, for example). Check how the package price compares with the total cost of buying each item individually, and you’re likely to find that by availing of the package, you’ll be saving money. Check with your school/college/university, since they might be offering such packages. Otherwise, check out local and online stores.
